I checked this hack against the airline’s website: yes you can save money, in the example I did above, I could save $200 but it would mean I would have no seat selection, last to board, no changes to ticket and the offered times were inconvenient, like getting to the city late afternoon or evening. I would say this is a great deal if you didn’t have to worry about time, not worry about all the overhead bin space being taken up, or who you sat next to, or what, like the toilets.
